How did you find translations for new words if they are so new?
That's a very good question. Language is a living, breathing
thing and as our lives change, languages also evolve. I
remember for example, that not too long ago, when the
Internet was just getting started, the phrase "home page" had
two Hungarian versions for some time: honlap and/or ottlap.
Honlap won, and the other word was forgotten. When I was
working on "new-born" words, I had to be careful and make
sure that I was including the right translation(s). Off to the
Internet! What a great research tool! I used it to verify, and
sometimes find the correct translation of quite a few words in
this Dictionary. This was probably the most fun part of my
work.
Why doesn't this dictionary include the phonetic transcription
of English words?
The answer to this question is a very practical one. This
Dictionary was intended primarily for Americans who want to
study Hungarian, to travel in Hungary. They already speak
English, so they don't need help with the pronunciation of
English words. They do, however, need help with Hungarian
pronunciation and the basics of Hungarian grammar, therefore
the Dictionary includes a pronunciation guide as well as a brief
introduction to Hungarian grammar.
