How DO you write a dictionary?
Short answer: with a lot of perseverance. But let me elaborate.
When the publisher, Hippocrene Books, Inc., first contacted
me and asked if I would like to write a Hungarian Practical
Dictionary, I was very excited to be asked and very eager to
get this project. Then, when all contracts were signed and all
deadlines were set, it really sunk in: now I would actually have
to write this thing!
Scary…
The publisher instructed me on how big they wanted the
Dictionary to be (15,000-16,000 entries on both sides), and I
knew how much time I had to write it, so from there it was
simple math: I had to complete so many entries a week, so
many a day, to be able to finish on time. So, I bought a really
comfortable office chair, and backed up my files often. I
worked at night and on weekends, and for about a year my
friends practically never saw me. All the time and effort I put
into this project paid off though, and I finished the manuscript
on time. I submitted the package on Labor Day, 2003 (how
appropriate).
The “twins” weighed eleven pounds and were almost the same
exact size – as far as I recall, one side had two more words
listed than the other.
